A Managing Director is responsible for giving strategic guidance and direction to the board to ensure that the Company achieves its financial vision, mission and long term goals.
We are in charge of coming up with a name for your business, securing the financing, finding a location for the business and registering your business as a sole directorship. With a partnership, you would have someone else involved in the business who could do these things, but as sole director, setting up the business falls on your shoulders.
An important consideration for any sole director is whether or not to hire employees. While employee salaries take money from the business, not having employees can limit the time you have to put into the day to day operations of the business. If you operate a store, you need someone to handle the customers. Without employees, that will be you. You will need to be taking care of customers while managing other aspects of the business. If your store is open seven days a week, you will have little time for anything else if you are operating the business. If your sole directorship is one that carries a lot of stock, it will be your responsibility to take inventory and to process orders. It will also be your job to unload orders as they are delivered. If you are operating a store without employees, this can be difficult to do without closing the store while you take care of these responsibilities.
The board of directors bears a legal responsibility to govern a corporation. Fulfilling that responsibility encompasses many individual roles and responsibilities. Each board member brings different strengths, talents, and abilities to the board. When board members merge their skills toward the mission and vision of an organization, it creates a synergy that makes the whole board greater than the sum of each individual’s contribution.
Effective board members possess solid character traits and personal integrity. They are active members who have tolerance of differing viewpoints and can communicate honesty with sensitivity. Board members should be amiable, responsive, and patient. It always helps to have a bit of a sense of humor.
Every board of directors gets its direction from the organization’s vision and mission. The vision is what the organization wants to see happen. The mission is the action plan to accomplish the vision. Because virtually everything the board does centers around the mission and vision, the board of directors should take great care in forming mission and vision statements that encompass the organization’s goals.
Board members spend the bulk of their time in organizational planning. They determine and monitor the organization’s products, services, and programs. In addition, they keep up to date on competitors and developments in the organization’s field.
In bringing together many voices and perspectives, there is bound to be some conflict among board members from time to time. Board members share the responsibility for staying true to the vision and mission of the organization when conflicts arise. They should be active listeners who can communicate the facts clearly. They should be ready to answer questions and objections and participate in productive discussions.
